We have submitted our step 4 detailed design and are waiting to hear back from Formula Zero. Sometime in the next couple of weeks we will learn whether we have been awarded a fuel cell and a spot in the 2008 races!

Formula Zero at UCLA: Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Racing

We are HercUCLAs, UCLA's student-run Hydrogen fuel-cell racing team. Our goal is to design and build a kart powered purely by hydrogen to compete in the Formula Zero (FZ) Championship. In this competition, universities from around the world will gather for a series of races in the second half of 2008. The purpose of this competition is to generate interest in fuel-cell technology and to show the public that the hydrogen fuel cell is clean, safe, and fast!

Team HercUCLAs is named after UCLA's Hydrogen Engineering Research Consortium (HERC) as well as the Greek hero, Hercules, and of course, UCLA itself. The team is made up of over 30 undergraduate students, several graduate students, and three faculty advisors. All of us are passionate about the environment and about racing, which is sure to be a winning combination.

We are currently beginning construction of our kart. We hope to have construction completed by June in order to do thorough testing throughout June and July. The 2008 series of races kicks off in Rotterdam, Netherlands in August 2008.
